Packing Tips for a Hassle-Free Move

When it’s time for the big move, your first instinct is to look at the stuff you’ve been accumulating for years with despair. How on earth will you be packing all those possessions and transferring them to your lovely, new home? We’ve put together a few tips to make your packing less hassling so that this special day can be memorable for all the right reasons.

Stock up on empty cardboard boxes

What is the one thing you will definitely need when moving? Boxes. Loads of them. To avoid the panic of last-minute packing, approach your local grocery store or supermarket and start acquiring free cardboard boxes a few at a time. This ensures that you’ll have enough boxes to carry your stuff on the day.

Don’t opt for boxes that are too big; ultimately, you will need to carry all of them, and having boxes that you can’t lift off the floor defeats the whole purpose. To make the process easier, reserve the bigger boxes for lighter items like pillows while transferring heavy items like books to the smaller boxes.

Protect your Breakables

You don’t want to start your adventure in a new home by spending a fortune on things you have broken during the move. First of all, make sure that you wrap your items carefully in newspapers and bubble wrap. A cheaper alternative to bubble wrap is wrapping up your valuables in items of clothing, which also helps you cut down on the number of boxes!

To prevent breakages, avoid empty spaces in boxes when packing so that your possessions don’t rattle and move around as they’re transferred from one place to another. You can fill up any empty spaces with newspapers or rolled-up socks.

Label Properly

Imagine having to open your boxes one by one to find what you’re looking for. Wouldn’t that be an absolute nightmare? When packing, make sure that you label your boxes clearly with what is contained inside them, as well as the room they need to go to. Label both the top and the side so that if the box is covered from one angle, you can still see its label without shifting any heavy boxes.

Avoid Grocery Shopping

Your goal when packing is to have as few items to carry as possible. Food items are something you can cut down on by reducing grocery shopping for the last few weeks and working on emptying that freezer of food that has long been forgotten. If you have way too much food than your body can handle, throw a party for your friends. The theme of the night: eating all there is in the fridge and freezer.

Let Go of Unwanted Things

We’re well aware of the power of sentimental value, but holding on to your peeling high school leather jacket and your faded Backstreet Boys poster is hardly ideal if you’re trying to save space. Go through your possessions and think hard about whether you need them. Clothes you’re not going to wear should be donated. You might even want to consider selling a few things on the internet like old technological devices to make some extra cash. The more you throw away or donate, the better you’ll feel when carrying half a dozen fewer boxes up your new home’s flight of stairs!
